Challenges To A Multicultural Australia

One of the most important reasons why a lot of people would want to go on an Australian immigration is because they know that they will be able to live freely in the way that they want in the country. Indeed, multiculturalism has been one of the most definitive characteristics of life in Australia. And this one has attracted countless of people from around the world.

However, though it might sound to be a good idea, the matter of multiculturalism in the land down under is actually far from being a simple one. As it is, Australian society is not all that perfect, and this contributes greatly as the how the concept of multiculturalism is carried out in the country. Thus, one must look into this further in order to understand Australian multiculturalism more.

To give you a good picture of the diversity of people who live in the country, here's a quick look on some of the demographic facts about Australia. Of the 22 million or so people living in the country, about 40 percent of these actually trace their roots back overseas. And you might be surprised to find out that these immigrants come from almost 200 different countries. Thus, you have a pretty good idea of how diverse Australians truly are.

And this diversity is highly valued by the country's people. In fact, it is highly intertwined with Australian lifestyle. Thus, it is not surprising if you encounter Australian dishes that has a strange mix of Western and Asian ingredients. And it is also not surprising that Australians of different ethnic backgrounds getting along well in different kinds of activities.

But, as has been said earlier, this one is all but perfect. The thing is, while most Australians do embrace and espouse multiculturalism, there are also groups on the other side of the fence. These are the groups who believe that there should be a stricter definition of what an Australian is supposed to be. And often, these stricter definitions exclude almost any other ethnic background from its folds.

Another challenge that threatens multiculturalism in Australia are the events that are happening around the world. For instance, terrorism has heightened the fear on many people's minds. This, in turn, has caused them to exclude everything that they associate with the threat from their society. And the sad thing is, Australians are often not exempted from making this move.

However, the Australian government, along with other groups, are bent on keeping Australia's multicultural values intact. And in this regard, it seems that they are indeed on the right track in making the continent the right place for anyone who want to live here.

Australia Going Green On Energy

If you are planning on an immigration to Australia, you are most probably considering a lot of things for your decision. And you might not know it, but environmental issues will also likely be on your list of things. Indeed, this one is also essential if you want to ensure that you will have a good life in the country.
And of all these environmental issues, one topic that has caught the attention of a lot of people, from ordinary people to the high ranking policy makers is that of renewable energy. Indeed, more and more Australians are constantly clamoring for the introduction of renewable energy sources in to the country. And the government is now slowly heeding and are now investing in the development of these.
As a start, it would be a good idea to look into Australia's power generation capability. Being a highly industrialized nation, the land down under generates a lot of electricity. As of 2006, the country's power infrastructure has generated around 255 terawatt-hours worth of power. Of these, around only 9 terawatts has been generated through renewable sources. To put it into perspective, this is only four percent of the country's total output.
This one is considered as a sad state by many renewable energy advocates, considering the the country has potential for use of these energy sources. Australia has a wide variety of natural resources that will be very useful in utilizing renewable energy. Plus, the country's size makes it ideal for the development of large scale projects.
However, the Australian government seems to have finally heard this clamor. The country's policymakers are now starting to look into various proposals for renewable energy development. And they have also begun to process of generating funds to jump-start the construction of these facilities. As of the latest figures, the country has allotted more than $18 billion for the development of these projects.
One of the biggest of these proposals is the construction of a massive wind farm in the state of Victoria. The farm will consist of more than 140 turbines, which will make it the largest in the southern hemisphere. The farm is expected to provide a large portion of the state's electrical needs. Further more, the Australian government is pushing ahead with its target of generating up to 20 percent of its power through renewable means by 2020.
with those figure, Australia is looking to be on serious contender for renewable energy use. And not a few people will definitely be happy for the development.

Australia's New Government Faces A Lot Of Challenges

Australia's New Government
Now that the elections in Australia is over, the government is now starting to get back to work. And they really need to do so, as there are many issues that needed to be tackled, including those with regards to Australian immigration. And it is most likely that the new Australian government will face a lot of new challenges as well.

If one might have recalled, the elections that was held in the country last Aug. 21 resulted in a so called hung parliament. This was after neither the ruling Labor Part nor the Liberal Party was able to gain a majority in the House of Representatives. The stalemate lasted for almost two weeks, as both parties attempted to negotiate with the elected independent representatives for support.

Finally, on Sept. 7, Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor, two of the four independents have announced that they have pledged support to Labor. Another independent, Adam Bandt, has already said before the election that he will be supporting Labor in case of a hung parliament. Representative Bob Katter was the only one who went with the Liberals.

With Labor staying in power, Julia Gillard also gets to remain as the Prime Minister. However, some political analysts argue that her new three year term would be quite a shaky one. They pointed out that the the results of the elections, where Labor was unable to secure a majority, is a clear indication that the support for the party has indeed been cut down by a significant portion. This, they said would greatly affect the level of acceptance of the government's policies.

Some observers also pointed out that the independent block in the parliament would now be a significant power broker. With the effort put by both parties into courting these independents, it is likely that they will again use this advantage to push their own agendas. Thus, the Gillard administration will have to closely take into consideration the independents' recommendation in formulating its policies.

However, despite this seemingly tight predicament, Gillard herself is very confident that her administration will be able to pull through for the next three years. She also welcomed the new setup, saying that it is a good indication that the the political landscape in the country has indeed changed a lot and that she would take this into consideration. She also added that this is a good opportunity for them to work out better policies for the country.

However, since it is just a few weeks into the new administration, it is hard to see how this would actually affect the actual policy making. And with that, observers and the Australian public are hoping that everything does indeed go out well.

Calling All Brits, Australia Wants You

australian visa application
With the country in need of more workers, Australian immigration officials are now busy wooing foreigners to move into the country. And one of the countries that they have in their sights is the United Kingdom. This one is actually not that surprising, considering how the UK and Australia are so closely tied together.

If you go back in history, you will get a full grasp of the close relationship between Britain and Australia. British explorer Captain James Cook established the first Western settlement in the continent. From then on, more and more British people have moved in and settled into the continent. And even while Australia separated from the British Empire at the turn of the 20th century, the two nations have maintained a close relationship with each other.

In fact, the British monarch (currently Queen Elizabeth II) is still consider by many people in Australia as the country's leader, albeit in a more ceremonial manner (Australia, after all, is already an independent country). Also, two of the six states that make up the entire continent are named in honor of Queen Victoria (Queensland and Victoria, respectively). Furthermore, a host of privileges are given to British residents coming in here.

That's why it is not surprising that Australia is eying to attract more UK residents to come in and work in the Land Down Under. One of their key programs is getting more British professionals to come into the country. And with that, Brits will find the new immigration rules to their advantage. One of these new rules is the stricter emphasis on English speaking capabilities for qualification, which is something that British residents already excel in.

Another move that immigration authorities are hoping to convince UK professionals with is the large pay. In fact, according to statistics, the amount of pay that foreign workers received in Australia has increased significantly in recent years. Though these are not as high as that given in Britain itself, they are still quite competitive and will surely attract a lot of folks.

On the other hand, it is not only the permanent workers that Australia is trying to attract. The country is also seeking to entice British tourists to come in and visit the country. And here, one of their biggest projects is coming up with temporary work opportunities that will not only let visitors earn some cash, but will also enable them to enjoy their vacation more. One the interesting jobs in particular that they are offering tourists is being a koala handler in one of the care center in the country.
