While the changes were initially met with opposition, both from the labor sector and visa applicants themselves, recent figures reveal that changes have indeed work as intended. In the last few months alone, the number of working visa applicants for various professional positions have increased significantly, with the with skilled visa migration now making up a large part of the overall immigration application count.
Bolstered by these results, the DIAC said that they are now focusing their efforts on getting more skilled professionals for the next migration season. With that, the department has announced the series of changes that they have lined up for next year. One of the most significant changes that they have announced was the raising of the age limit for skilled visa application to 49 years old. The department hopes that, through this, more of the older professionals would be enticed to work in Australia.
The DIAC have also renewed its emphasis on the importance of English proficiency for skilled visa applicants. In relation to this, they have also announced the new points system to be used for assessing work visa. Here, applicants getting a Superior rating in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam will be automatically be given 20 points for their assessment.
Aside from these changes, the DIAC have also said that they are continuously working with the local industries in order to attract more workers. Department officials have said that, by working with the industry players more closely, they will be able to determine their exact needs and meet them more. The department has identified Queensland as one of the states that has a significant need for skilled workers. In particular, it has pointed out the state's liquified natural gas mining industry as one of the industries that has a large need for skilled workers.
